The history of the Lions Club Ljubljana is to a large extent also the history of Slovenian lionism. The first Slovenian Lions Club was established on the initiative of the primordial lion Borut MiklavÄiÄa, who was the consul general of Yugoslavia in Austria in that time and who accepted an invitation to a Lions Club Carinthia evening in Klagenfurt in 1989. He recognised the deep humane core of the movement and the idea, which impressed him, so he started to search for adherents.
27 founding members (some of them moved to another club: Janez BohoriÄ, today LK Bled; Janko PopoviÄ, today LK Ljubljana Forum; the regretfully deceased Henrik Ubeleis and Zvest Appolonio and two members, who are no longer part of the organisation: Jaka Penca and Matija Å kof) have built the founding ground, established connections to European clubs and started the activities. They’ve built a majestic fortress • in only six years the club grew into a strong district with 20 independent clubs, marked as District 129 in the Lions organisation.
Today Slovenia has 52 clubs with 1500 members and belongs to countries with the highest number of LC members per thousand inhabitants. This number is still growing irrepressibly! A considerable fact hereby is that every fifth Slovenian Lions organisation member is a woman!
Furthermore, the Slovenian Lions founded the first LC in Bosnia & Herzegovina and Macedonia in the time of the war in Yugoslavia. In cooperation with Croatian Lions we still support the development of new clubs in these states, and this year we received the »Coordinating Lion« for the development of lionism in Serbia and Montenegro. We transfer our experience to all Lions of Central and East Europe.
In the meantime, the history and the role of the Lions Club Ljubljana had also its idependant development. The membership now extended to 33 members and since 1990 there were 28 chairmanships:
